4K’s participation in the Autumn Across America project is part
of a
larger unit on writing poetry this fall. The focus of the unit
had
three parts: to practice using descriptive words and phrases in
writing, to include personal voice in writing, and to learn
about
many different types of poems.
After reading Fall is here! We love it! by Elaine Good
and The
Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown, the class talked
about the way
the authors used descriptive writing in order to create
interesting
pictures in their readers’ minds.
The class brainstormed a list of descriptive words and phrases
about
fall in small groups then shared their ideas with the class.
The
whole class worked together to create a poem in which they
described
why fourth graders enjoy the season of fall here in Whitefish
Bay, WI.
This year in 4K, students are reading poems each week from
their
poetry binders to practice fluency, so they had a good idea
about the
many different types of poetry. In addition, they were also
given
samples of several types of poetry from
Memaw’s Creative
Writing
Corner and had several weeks to experiment
writing a
variety of poems in their writing notebooks.
After a discussion about poetry and fall poems, students took
several
class periods to create, revise, edit, and “polish” their
individual
fall poems. Fourth graders worked with peer editors to make
their
poems the best that they could be!
We hope you enjoy reading our class poem and our individual
poems

Autumn in Wisconsin
An acrostic poem written by 4K
All
the colorful maple and oak leaves are falling in Wisconsin
Ultimate
season for having fun on hayrides and jumping in the leaves
The
crisp, chilly temperatures are feeling colder every day
Under
the ground roots of pumpkins grow, jack-o-lanterns for all
Mmmm
- Halloween candy, pumpkin pie, pumpkin seeds, caramel apples,
apple cider
No
one outside - we're trick-or-treating, watching football, raking
leaves, carving pumpkins |
