Mrs. Nakas' Second Grade
Hurlbutt Elementary School
Weston, Connecticut

We live in a small town in southwestern Connecticut called Weston. Our town is located about an hour drive from New York City, near Long Island Sound. There are only about 10,000 people living in our town and only 4 traffic lights.  Weston was established in 1787.  Weston has lots of old landmarks, like the old Post Office, the Coley House, and Devil's Den.  We study our town, both the past and the present.

Visit the   Weston Historical Society  to find out more about the history of our town.  Click on Images at the top.

We read books about autumn. We especially enjoyed the photographs in the book, What Happens in the Autumn by Suzanne Venino.   We reinforced and enriched our study of light and its affect on the world around us by taking pictures.  Many of the photos the students have taken for their study of the various properties of light were trees in autumn.  We photographed shadows of light and light passing through nature.

We also worked on a glyph called "Our Secret Autumn Tree."  The glyph relayed information about the children. Here is the information it told.

 Our Secret Autumn Tree Glyph

This is a picture of our glyphs.

After we made our glyphs, we graphed the results.  By doing our graphs, we found out…

  • Most of the children liked to wear sweatshirts in Autumn and the fewest number of children liked to wear jackets.

  • Nine children liked to play a sport, six children liked to pick apples,  two children liked to go to the playground, and three children liked to jump in the leaves in Autumn.

  • A total of fifteen children thought Halloween was the special day they enjoyed the most.

  • More children liked red colored leaves the best and an equal number of children liked yellow, brown and orange leaves.

  • And finally, for most of children Autumn was not our favorite season.
