Jill Rose-Fish's First Grade
Bement School
 Old Deerfield, MA

We are enjoying fall here in beautiful Deerfield, Massachusetts!  We
have had a colorful fall, all the leaves have changed color and
dropped.  Now the cold winds of November are beginning to blow!  Our
school is called the Bement School  and is located on an historic street- Old Main St. in Old Deerfield, Massachusetts.  The street is very quaint- a typical old New England street!

There is a lot of history here in Deerfield.  Probably the most famous is that of the 1704 raid on the settlement of Deerfield by Frenchmen and their native allies on a cold February morning.  There is a book that tells the story of a young boy taken captive and forced to march from Deerfield to Canada.  The book is called The Boy Captive of Old Deerfield by Mary P. Wells Smith.  On Main St. you can visit old homes that are now museums and there is also a museum that has artifacts from the raid.  Visit a web site about the raid and one with information about historic Deerfield.

South Deerfield, just south of Old Deerfield, is the home of Yankee
Candle!  We are planning a fall field trip to explore this aspect of
our community!

Here are some of the many pieces of our fall projects...

Fall in Deerfield Massachusetts…

Tastes like apple pie
Smells like pumpkin pie
Sounds like leaves crunching under our feet
Feels chilly
Looks like red, yellow, orange and brown leaves.

This leaf project was made using tissue paper and glue.  Students
worked on this project with their parents on parents day.

This project is actually a "double project"  We made leaf prints as a
fall community activity for the internet project and it will also go
into our community scrapbook that we are creating.  The scrapbook page is just below this picture.

We also wrote list poems entitled Fall Is...

We read a lot of fall books.   Some of our favorites were...

10 Apples Up On Top
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything
Too Many Pumpkins
Pumpkin Circle

Here are some of the projects we did with these books...

This is a picture of me (Mrs. Rose-Fish) working with a student on a hands-on pumpkin exploration activity.  We are trying to measure how round our pumpkin is.   Some of us cut yarn that was too long or too short.  Some of us were really close!

Ten Apples Up On Top

Here is some "pumpkin wondering" we did...

Are pumpkins mostly full or empty?
Do the ridges (ribs) tell how old a pumpkin is?
When do they turn orange?
How many months is its life cycle? (4 months)

Are there lines on the seeds?
