Leaf Man Project 2008

Our Butterfield Canyon Elementary school is nestled in the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains (pronnounce O-Ker). Our school is named after a popular canyon called Butterfield Canyon. The canyon consists mainly of conifers and aspen. Because we are at a higher elevation the leaves begin changing color around mid-September. The area is also home to thriving populations of butterflies, deer, mountain lions, and squirrels.

Our study began with discussing our community and the various places in our community that provided goods and services. We then read the story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. We talked about all the places in our community that Leaf Man could visit. The students were given an assignment to collect leaves from around the community.

Most of the leaves came from the Butterfield Canyon area. There is a paved road that winds through the canyon where many people like to take scenic drives and take family pictures. The children pressed the leaves in heavy books and then brought them to school. They were given instructions to think of a place in our community that their Leaf Man could go. They then wrote their sentences to go with their pictures.

The students had so much fun creating their places where Leaf Man could go.
