Mrs.
Burran's First Grade Class had a wonderful time participating in the
Colorful Spring Poetry Project!
Our participation in this online collaborative literacy project was the
culmination of a Spring Poetry Writing Workshop unit. The purpose of
this unit had a threefold objective: to practice using descriptive words
and phrases in writing, to include personal voice in writing, and to
learn about the many different types of poems. These are skills that
are required by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
We
began by reading several books about Spring, including Hello, Spring
by Mary Packard and Step Into Spring - A New Season by Jane Belk
Moncure. We were also studying Farms, as part of our Bridges Math
curriculum. The farm animals became a favorite topic to write about in
Writing Workshop!
We read several different styles of poetry before beginning our own
poems. Our poems are the result of a collaborative, cooperative writing
experience. In small groups, we wrote a haiku, diamante, cinquain,
questrain, and limerick poem. Each individual then got a print out of
the 5 poems written by their group, so that they could make their own
illustrations. These wonderful Spring poems will be put in a poetry
book that they are making for Mother's Day.
Spring Color was the first online writing project I have been a part
of...based on the results, it will not be the last!

Will she fly away

Flowers bloom in Spring
Graceful pink flowers waving
Goodbye to winter. |

Slow rain falls gently
On the yellow daffodils
Causing them to bloom.

Butterflies dancing
On the pale yellow daisies,
Ballet on the blooms.
