Spring:
An Alphabet Acrostic by Steven Schnur, illustrated by Leslie Evans
was the book we read to get our inspiration for the wonderful experience
of writing our free verse poem. Our class recommends this book. It's a
great read for all ages. What a wonderful, attractive, and creative
book! It's a picture book done in the form of acrostics. The poems are
a visual as well as a literary delight.
We decided to start off our project by looking for
signs of spring in our community during spring break. We recorded our
observations in our nature journals. During our first class meeting
after vacation, we shared our journal entries. Then our class wrote this
free verse poem during shared writing time.
Spring Comes To Newark
Not so many colorful gardens are here
But signs are spring can be found this year
We planted yellow and purple pansies around green trees
Waiting to share nectar with yellow and black bumble bees
In the school garden
Red and yellow tulips appear
And yellow daffodils, royal purple crocuses grow near
Yellow forsythias are turning bright green
In many of the neighbor's yards can be seen
Chirping blue jays can be heard far and near
Red cardinals and brown squirrels are coming here
The grass no longer brown is spreading green all over our town
Basketball teams are all dressed in school colors:
blue, yellow, orange, red and green
Yes, oh yes it is definitely spring
Some other books we read:
It's Spring by Linda Glaser
Caterpillar Spring Butterfly Summer by Susan Hood and
Claudine Gevry
That's What Happens When It's Spring by Elaine W. Good
Miss Rumphius by Barbara Clooney
